It’s now a weekly examen.

As most people, I have a series of resolutions this year. And like most people, the resolutions deal with diet, exercise, time management, typical self improvement goals. I have tried something different this year on the side of accountability. I am trying to set aside time to work on these goals which I have broken into recurring tasks. I even have them show on all my electronics, multiple nags to keep up with things.

To get everything done within the allotted time without getting myself additional stress and heartburn has, as previously posted, required some adjustments to the daily routine. I am also realizing that if I want to get the physical portion of my goals done and still get some writing done, the daily examen will have to become a weekly product. I am able to capture some of the thoughts daily, but to actually get it into a coherent blog posting, I will have to work on building to it through the week.

The physical fitness goals – getting my weight down to a level that meets both the Cardiologist’s and Philmont’s Height & Weight table approval is going to be challenging. The first meeting with the new Cardiologist showed not only some holiday backsliding on the diet, but the blood sugar level had elevated to a pre-diabetic level. He gave me until the next appointment to get it down or start an additional round of medication.

Diet & Exercise changes are the alternative to medication. I have two daily tasks for accountability towards the fitness goal:

Logging my daily calorie intake through the Livestrong Application. The app has a pretty good database of calorie counts and lets you build your own meals. It also gives you a daily intake goal based on desired outcome. My outcome has been reinforced by the new cardiologist.

Logging exercise through same app. Now I can tell that the 20 minutes of Physical Therapy exercises burn about a hundred calories. Hey I will take a 100 burned any day. Add in the 20 minute dog walking loop that we do usually twice a weekend and we have another 100 calories. I have also the new marching orders from the cardiologist about a minimum round of aerobic exercise 5 to 6 times a week. I was doing 3 to 4 up to November when I let it drop off. Now it is back on the treadmill, and occasionally back in the water.

So far so good. I have managed to keep myself under the pound a week caloric intake goal. I have
also managed to get more workouts in. I will have to plan some additional tasks during camping weekends and around meetings when they crop up. Getting a gym in the building will help.

While beginning to focusing on getting some of the big picture scouting goals done – I realize that I am not practicing my goal to not read additional meaning into an issue. Additional communication is needed to assure there is no confusion which can escalate to conflict. Confusion leads down a path we don’t need to go especially when the project is about cheerful service. There are some big issues we would like to get done in 2012 & 2013 so I have a lot of additional groundwork to get organized. I took a big step sharing my Dropbox folder on inductions. The knowledge doesn’t need to reside with my forever.

Going through my RSS Feeds, I found that one of the writer’s/podcasters that I follow had listed his current collection of feeds. The first one that I pull up drops a quote on me that had to be captured.

“You do not, as many will tell you, need to grow a thick skin. What you need is to open yourself to the possibility that you can do better.” (Randy Murray, posted on A Better Mess).

During the training on Saturday, we spoke of the “fact” that the leadership position would help one develop a thick skin. Dealing with 3000 volunteers, you realize that your decisions are not going to please everyone, and you will definitely hear the displeasure. My usual approach has been to ignore the criticism and go forward. However, over the weekend with conflict anticipated, I decided to share a lot of the work I have put together on the Ordeals program over the year.

Thinning the skin.
