It’s all good so far. 4/23/13

April 24, 2013

The battle continues with the new laptop and the wireless network.  I don’t know why it is challenging me this way.  It is probably a setting someplace.  It will work for a while then something locks up.

I was looking at the modem settings for the home network and accidentally reset it then fought for an hour before I realized how to change the network key.  I have met the (one of) the enemy, and he is us.

It has been slightly more challenging today.  I continue to fight the browsers.  I am not sure if they are not remembering the DNS settings, or just have crap in the cache that needs to be cleared.  I finally cleared the history and seem to be getting through.  I will plan on spending some quality genius time to get this issue figured out.  It has me frustrated.

The machine works well except for the web stuff it needs to do.  It is likely operator error.  We will see if the genius says “I haven’t ever seen that happen before”.  Here is to being the explorer.

There was a minor hiccup with the installation of programs on the new laptop last night.  I was trying to install Office 365 and suffered from an operator error.  You extract the credit card from the cardboard cover and look for the 25 digit code.  The code is under a magnetic strip.  Not a piece of tape that says please remove, no.  A strip that, according to the nice fellow at Best Buy at 9:30 pm, is easily exposed by scrapping with a knife.  It was probably line one of the job instructions.

Anyway, Office 365 gets me Office on the laptop and on 4 other computers – my desk top, the daughter’s chromebook if there is room, Jesse’s desktop, etc.  so we will not have to worry about updates and student discounts.

Now we have Outlook and the other Office functions working and stuff moved over from Drop Box.  We are in business.  I do need to learn how the windows and tabs work on the laptop.  I published the first two sentences of this entry accidentally by hitting some combination of the trackpad/mouse device.

I don’t mind. It is a peaceful Sunday morning.  I have good coffee available and can deal with the learning curve.

The new machine is unboxed. Just a few questions on registration and the cloud carries information into the machine.

Connected to the home network and downloading updates. We will add Dropbox next and see how best to use mail.

I also bought a copy of Office 365. This will allow the family to stay continuously remain updated with the office software.

Dropbox installation done and syncing underway. Next will be adding the email accounts from gmail etc. Should continue to be interesting.
