The One Platform Experiment 10-05-11

The experiment –  to capture my thoughts (for what they are worth) once in a single location, and after editing distribute through various social platforms.

My challenges: Since my writing is done in the morning I have to deal  with early morning clarity of thought.  I also have a concern about the time spent editing, adding links and the learning curve with the various platform features.   But if I don’t write in the morning, when will I have time?  Work is work, evenings are supposed to be for exercise, time with family, and projects. We will see how it goes.

Daily Examen 10-04-11

Remind me Lord that tech support staff, insurance company clerks, and the poor drivers during the commute are also my neighbors.

It has been a while since I tried the discipline of the Daily Examen. I still download and listen to the Pray as You Go podcast, but quit the written reflection. I am up early enough to read the Daily Office – Both Morning Prayer and the Lectionary.

I need to make time to read them contemplatively instead of skimming them and perhaps use this blog as a tool for recording the reflection.

Today is the day that the Church honors St. Francis of Asissi.
One could say that he should be considered the patron saint of the new minimalism movement; however, his ministry was more that self imposed doing without.
His was a vow of to use only what he needed and to spend his time and resources with the poor.

It is good thing to learn to sacrifice, to reduce one’s carbon footprint, to be less materialistic and spend time learning and growing.
But I don’t see that the current trend has the component of service. We need to do more with time we find.

Come be with me all you who carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”

10-02-11

Its that quiet time before we go to Church. The dogs have been walked, breakfast done and the newspaper finished. Sandra is getting ready, I have a cup of coffee and a little time in front of the computer. Looking to see how much of the morning blog can go out in the various media. First composing in plain text in Simple-note, then cutting and editing the status into a tweet, and ultimately bringing the whole message over into WordPress for publication. It’s now 9:00 and we are starting the have to get there panic. I will make another cup of coffee and watch.

We got to Church as planned, Sandra’s team had done the set up as needed and everything was in good shape for the service. I had a chance to visit in the Parish Hall, and spent some time making coffee and discuss making coffee, a verboteen topic while on the vestry.

The service went well, only a couple of rounds of glitches with the sound system. We hope to meet with the sound engineer who did the family life center work on Friday. A good turn out to hear the Bishop and see the confirmation.  The Bishop, Fr. Paul, Fr. Scotty, and Wendy were all able to use the altar space and communion went well.  After having been through the remodel of the Sanctuary, and knowing what it takes to produce a good service, I find myself on edge when the mechanics don’t work well.  We do have a plan to go forward with Phase II and have a meeting being set up with the sound man that did the work on our Family Life Center.  I need to remember that we have a plan in place that will happen on God’s time and remember that a bit of feedback is only a reminder that it is His Service and not mine.

Bishop Doyle spoke of change, of the need not to wall ourselves off from the world. He charged us to be out there in it, but also to expect for it to come back in with us. To remember that it is God’s church and we are only stewards. Echos well with where I need to be.  To trust more that things will work out the way they are supposed to, according to the schedule they have.

10/01/2011 It’s All Good So Far

I have been writing an unpublished version of the Blog – under the title “It’s All Good So Far” in a Simple Note/Elements Text File format.  Posting only to a closed cloud repository.  However, listening to a Minimal Mac podcast yesterday http://minimalmac.com/enough on taking a sabbatical from social networking, the topic was raised about doing more within a private RSS feed.  The idea was to be able to capture thoughts (tweets, posts, other feeds, etc.) in a single area that might be free of advertising and monitoring.    I am not sure if I will go back and capture the thoughts that I have only saved as text files, but I am going to try to do this going forward.

I am not sure what I will capture.

  • Will I get back to the Daily Examen?
I would like to make time for this, it has been a major lapse.
  • Will I try to hold myself accountable by posting more diet & exercise entries?
     I hope so.
  • Will it degenerate into rants?
On occasion, but I am trying to be a better person and will work on self limiting the snark.

I hope to capture the lessons learned as they occur, and to remember all the blessing I have been given.  All in all, it has been all good so far.
