Today the Church celebrates the Conversion of the Apostle Paul. His conversion story shows that God has a special calling or purpose for each of us. His conversion story is the central them around the God & Life program for teenagers that I have helped teach at Episcopal Scout Retreats and I look continually to it for inspiration in my role as a Church leader.

It comforts me that there is a plan for me, that I will be equipped with the gifts or armor that I need to do take on a task that He has for me. I have said before that He is messing with me, because sometimes I find that the call is taking in places that I would not have gone on my own.

I have been serve on discernment committees and listen to people describe their call to ministry and I have always been amazed to hear the strength of conviction when someone has truly received a calling.

Sometimes the results are difficult, like our Priest being called away from us, and sometimes they are challenging, thinking about what the effect of our calling this Priest would be to our Church.

These callings all have something in common. These callings come through Prayer and they don’t go away. They are not whimsical, those “that would be neat to do” thoughts, these calls come and sometimes you have to struggle with them to understand them.

But the great thing is, it does not matter who we are, the life we have lived up to this point, when the call comes, it is for us , it changes us, it takes us places we did not think we would go, it stretches us, teaches us, and we are better for it.

“Christ has no hands but mine”.

We are called and equipped to feed the sheep, some times it takes more than prayer, some times we need to role up our sleeves and put our hands to work, doing service for others.

Take my hands, and let them move at the impulse of Thy love.

Today’s Gospel reading was from John (4:7-15) about Jesus and the Samaritan women at the well. The Pray as You Go podcast then started with a Tazie Choir singing about searching for the water of life, so today I have been reflecting about water.

I have spent a lot of time in the water, a competitive swimmmer through high school and into college. I have continuesd to swim as an adult, competing again as a masters swimmer in my 20’s and 30’s. I took a hiatus, gained weigth and started swimming again as I began my 50’s.

I am back in the pool again as I work to lose weight, to make changes in my life. I am also spending time reflecting on other positive changes in my life. This has given rise to the reflections captured in the Daily Examen portinn of my blog.

Today I am have been asking myself if I am exercising properly in the water of life. Am I trying to make positive changes through the Holy Spirit? Am I reducing myself (or my selfishness)? I just know I feel called to dive deeper.

4 x 100 kick IM Order
3 x 100 Free
4 x 50 Breast
100 IM reverse warm down

1500 meters in 35 plus minutes
Neither log quite well into the Livestrong.com website’s daily plate that lets you track calories and exercise. Had to estimate a bit and round down on the total calories burned.

The site helps you set a daily calorie intake. Mine (assuming that I do some walking around during the day and am not a total couch spud) is 2052, which should theoretically put me at a net weight loss of 2.5 lbs\week. I will be weighing in on Thursday mornings.

What was neat was my net calorie count for the day (before dinner) was -55 calories. Even after a slice of Bertolli’s mushroom lasagna and a small slice of pie, the total net count is 830 for the day.

The process still has me looking at menu options and calculating calories per portion. Livestrong and the Daily Plate sites have good databases of both commercial and homemade foods. And yes there is a Livestrong Iphone app for that. Still there are occasions that I have to do some approximating. Overall though it seems that I have been able to keep the intake to ~1800 calories per day or less.

I will never get back down to the college swimming weight but my goal is to get under the Philmont weight guidelines with room to spare.
